Other Conditions & Procedures

The Latest Technologies

Our skilled surgeons perform thousands of diagnostic and surgical colorectal procedures each year using the latest technologies. In addition to the procedures presented throughout this site, our areas of expertise also include the following minimally invasive advanced techniques:

da Vinci® Robotic Surgery. Several of our physicians including Dr. Dale Burleson and Dr. Jefferson Hurley have been trained and certified on the newest leading edge technology for minimally invasive colon surgery. The da Vinci robotic technology allows our physicians to perform complex colon surgeries with more precise incisions providing our patients with a faster recovery time and less pain.

Treatment of Obstructive Defecation Disorders with the Stapled Transanal Rectal Resection (STARR) Procedure. This procedure is a newer technique used to treat a condition resulting in chronic constipation called Obstructed Defecation Syndrome (ODS). It corrects the anatomic disorder of ODS and allows patients to improve rectal emptying. The surgery involves using a circular stapling device to remove the “telescoping or prolapsing rectum” via the anus in two half circles.

Polyp Removal by Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery. TEMS is a minimally invasive procedure to remove rectal polyps or growths that are too large to remove via the colonoscopy or other endoscopy methods. TEMS can remove polyps felt to be too high or too large to remove by classic transanal removal, thus avoiding abdominal surgery. Performed through the anus, no incisions are needed. Patients typically feel no pain during the procedure, which is performed in an outpatient setting. TEMS has a much lower recurrence rate, meaning the polyps recur less often, compared to standard transanal removal. Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery is used specifically to treat early rectal cancers.
