Jefferson B. Hurley, M.D.
Board Certified American Board of Colon & Rectal Surgery
"A good patient-doctor relationship is essential for a good outcome and it is my desire to do everything I can to help my patients through their problem."
Jeff Hurley gained international experience in general surgery as a missionary surgeon in Nigeria, West Africa after finishing his surgery residency. In Africa, Dr. Hurley had the unique experience of performing abdominal operations in a challenging setting, as well as performing surgery for orthopedic, urologic, gynecologic, and head and neck diseases. He and his wife lived in Africa for one year, and their experiences there strongly shaped their world view and made them greatly appreciate the excellent medical system we have here in the U.S. They also received great joy and satisfaction in helping people who otherwise would have suffered. After coming back to the U.S., Dr. Hurley focused on the specialty of colorectal surgery during his fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, which he completed in 1999. Since beginning his practice with Texas Colon & Rectal Specialists, Dr. Hurley continues to advance the field of laparoscopic colorectal surgery by improving and perfecting complex techniques. His training at the Cleveland Clinic, an international referral center for patients with complex inflammatory bowel disease, along with his laparoscopic expertise, has led to a special interest in reconstructive procedures for ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Dr. Hurley has also become the first surgeon in North Texas to perform a robotic low anterior resection for rectal cancer using the da Vinci® Surgical System, which allows for exact precision during complex surgery. Dr. Hurley's practice covers a variety of interests, including colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, constipation, and anorectal diseases such as hemorrhoids, anal fissure and anal fistula. He also performs screening colonoscopies with biopsy and removal of polyps. Dr. Hurley is able to perform laparoscopic colon surgery for the large majority of his patients. He has lectured and taught laparoscopic techniques to other surgeons, and makes use of the latest in surgical technology in this exciting field. Dr. Hurley is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon & Rectal Surgery. He is involved in teaching in the colorectal surgery fellowship at U.T. Southwestern and Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, and is an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He is also currently the Chairman of Colorectal Surgery at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, as well as Presbyterian's Cancer Liaison Physician for the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Hurley frequently speaks to groups of physicians and nurses for continuing medical education in colorectal diseases. A native of Dallas, TX, Jeff Hurley graduated from Lake Highlands High School. He and his wife, Carrie, have three children: Bennett, Hogan and Annie. He enjoys coaching youth baseball and basketball, as well as running, lifting weights and playing golf. He is an avid reader of fiction and biography, and enjoys photography and editing home movies on his Macintosh computer. He is somewhat of a film buff and enjoys a good late night movie. Taking care of people is what Dr. Hurley enjoys most. He is dedicated to making his patients feel as comfortable as possible as they undergo evaluation and treatment. He realizes that his office can be an intimidating place, and wants to assure his patients that they will receive his and his staff's undivided attention while addressing their needs.
